Can I customise a BROWN JERSEY bike?

YES! Of Course!

You just need to contact us to discuss your requirements and we will use every resource at our disposal to MAKE IT HAPPEN for you.

Who is STURMEY ARCHER and are their internal hubs good quality?

Sturmey Archer INVENTED internal gear hubs!  The first patent for a Sturmey Archer 3 Speed hub was granted in 1902 when Henry Sturmey and James Archer developed it for a progressive bicycle company located in Raleigh Street Nottingham England.  More information about the wonderful long history of the Sturmey Archer brand can be found on their site here: www.sturmey-archer.com/

Importantly, Taiwanese company SunRace purchased the Sturmey Archer brand and all of it's fantastic patents back in 2000 and have applied the type of superior quality control (zero tolerance) that has made Taiwanese bicycle and component manufacturing the world's best in the business.

We love Sturmey Archer and it's 110 plus year history.  We are very, very proud to be using their equipment on all of our internal gear hub bikes.

What is a ‘FLIP-FLOP’ hub?

All Brown Jersey Single Speed Bikes come fitted with a ‘Flip-Flop’ hub fitted to the rear wheel as standard. This hub has a ‘fixed gear’ sprocket on one side and a ‘freewheel’ gear sprocket on the other – it allows the rider to switch between the two simply by removing the rear wheel from the frame, turning it around and refitting.

The difference between the two is simple: On the ‘fixed gear’ (or ‘fixie’) side the pedals are permanently engaged, so when the back wheel turns the pedals will turn too. On the ‘freewheel’ side you can stop pedaling and coast along without pedaling, when you coast you’ll hear that familiar ratcheting ‘click click click’ noise that you get on traditional bikes.

Unless requested at the time of shipment, all Brown Jersey Single Speed Bikes will have the rear wheel fitted on the ‘freewheel’ side of the hub when they are delivered. We do this because we feel that it is the best way to get to know your bike safely before making the change to the ‘fixed gear’. Once you make the change you’ll unlikely ever go back – you’ll be a bona fide Fixie rider and you’ll be hooked for life!

What is the right frame size for me?

How is my bike packaged for delivery?

Once you have chosen your bike we will set about doing a pre-delivery service and safety check to make sure that your bike is ready to go. We put your bike on our service stand and our mechanic will adjust the brakes properly, tighten & align the headset & stem, check and adjust the cables and give the bike a full lubrication & 1stservice. At this point our mechanic will also fit (where possible) any Upgrade parts that you have chosen.

Once this thorough process has been completed the mechanic will remove the front wheel and handlebars, package them to prevent damage in transit and secure them to the side of the frame. Plastic spacers are placed inside the forks and on the wheel extrusions to prevent compression damage. Down tubes, forks, seat stays, chain stays, head tube, seat tube and cross bar are all wrapped in protective packaging. Your bike will then be carefully placed inside one of our custom Brown Jersey cardboard bike boxes, taped up and be ready for hand over !

What assembly is required when I get my bike?

Your bike will be 95% assembled when it arrives.  Assembly will take 10 minutes (maximum) and will require the use of a few basic tools details as follow:

  1. Fit the handlebars to the stem (5mm hex key)
  2. Fit the seatpost and adjust seat to required height (5mm hex key)
  3. Fit the pedals - note: they are marked L & R (15mm Spanner)
  4. Carefully remove all protective packaging on frame

Also, in order to comply with Australian Standards AS/NZS 1927:2010 you will need to fit the F & R reflectors, bell and chainguard that is supplied in the extra box.

What tools are required for ongoing maintenance?

Look after your bike and it will look after you! (that's what grandad BrownJ used to say - one of the few times he made any sense at all).  Being minimalist by design, one of the best things about a Brown Jersey bike is that they are simple and easy to maintain.  Getting to know your bike by doing the small maintenance jobs yourself will add an extra dimension of enjoyment to bike ownership.  Embrace independence!

If you do not already have access to a good tool kit we suggest that you acquire the following items in order to look after your new bike:

  • 4mm, 5mm & 6mm Hex Keys
  • 15mm open end Wrench (rear wheel and pedals)
  • 10mm Wrench for adjusting the chain tensioners
  • Old rags for cleaning the chain and drive train
  • Oil for the drive train
  • Tyre levers
  • Pump

Our Bike Hand 8 function FIXIE tool will cover a majority of these requirements and is portable enough to strap under your seat for adjustments when you are out and about.  Check it out in our tools section.
